Keeping clothes, sheets and other garments clean and odorless involves knowing how to properly clean a washing machine.
By cleaning your washing machine regularly, you can keep it in good condition. This also has the short-term benefit of making your clothes smell better. However, it is also an essential maintenance task that extends the life of the machine at the heart of your laundry ideas. It saves you from having to replace the machine, which would cost money and time.
Cleaning your washing machine is simple - just follow our guide for all the details.
5 FOOLPROOF TIPS ON HOW TO CLEAN A WASHING MACHINE
When you think of cleaning a washing machine; you probably think of the drum, but there are a few different parts of the washing machine that need attention at regular intervals. Neglect them and mold, soap scum and limescale can build up, making it smelly and even resulting in blocked pipes.
"Deep cleaning a washing machine should be completed once a month to help remove any contaminants; such as mold spores and bacteria, internal debris and mold growth. It also helps the machine operate at peak efficiency,' says Michael Rubino, president of All American Restoration, and author of The Mold Medic: An expert's guide to mold removal.
Use these steps to clean a washing machine.
1. RUN YOUR MACHINE ON THE HOTTEST CYCLE
Many of us use the eco or quick wash settings on our washing machine, ignoring the hot wash, which will do much of the hard work of cleaning the washing machine drum for us.
To keep the drum fresh with the minimum of effort; get into the habit of running the machine empty on a hot wash cycle every two weeks; without detergent that can cause foaming. You can be more efficient from now on by ensuring that you always wash bed linen; for example, on a hot wash, assuming it can withstand the heat.
The aim of hot washing is to kill germs; something we have all become more aware of since the pandemic; and they are causing the odors.
Alternatively, you can also run your machine's 'clean' cycle, if there is one, which will produce similar results. "Many new front-loading machines have specific cleaning cycles that are often overlooked," says Wayne Edelman, then CEO of high-end dry cleaning service Meurice Garment Care, which specializes in interior and closet cleaning services.
2. HOW TO CLEAN THE WASHING MACHINE DRUM
If you're trying to get rid of washing machine odors, that's probably where they come from. If hot-washing hasn't improved the odors emanating from your washing machine, try again, this time pouring about 2 cups (500 ml) of coolant into the drum before running an empty cycle.
This will not only kill the germs and therefore nullify the odors, but it will also eliminate the build-up of limescale and soap residue that accumulates in the machine, often invisibly.
Finally, to keep the drum free of bacteria after each wash, it's worth leaving the washing machine door open so that the drum can dry, especially if you have a front loader. After a few hours then, you can close the door again until the next use.
3. HOW TO CLEAN THE WASHING MACHINE SEAL
After cleaning the washing machine drum, turn to the seal - the soft rubber part, just inside the washing machine door. This is where everything you've mistakenly put in the washing machine - coins, hairpins, debris - accumulates, along with lint, detergent residue and water. And then of course, over time, they can become moldy - and smelly.
Ideally, you should then check the underside of the seal after each wash to remove any sharp objects that could damage your washing machine. And, it's a sensible measure to run a soft, absorbent cloth around and inside the seal as well - this ensures that when you drag the laundry out of the machine, it doesn't accumulate dirt inside the seal.
Once this is done, then turn to washing and clean the inside of the washing machine door as well.
4. HOW TO CLEAN THE WASHING MACHINE DETERGENT DRAWER
This is often the place where detergent residues accumulate and, as the area remains damp, mold then starts to grow there too.
The best thing to do is to carefully remove the detergent drawer and soak it in hot soapy water. If the residue doesn't come off after rinsing, use a scrubbing brush or an old toothbrush to remove it before rinsing again.
"If there are any signs of mold, use Clorox Clean-Up and a toothbrush to clean everything," recommends Wayne Edelman.
While it's drying, inspect the drawer cavity - there's likely to be detergent residue and mold lurking in there too.
As you did with the drum door, leave the detergent drawer open when you empty the washing machine and close it when it's dry.
Reduce the detergent too - you can then check how much you need per wash in your washing machine manual and it's usually listed on the detergent packaging. This will help reduce the build-up of residue in both the drawer and the drum.
5. HOW TO CLEAN A WASHING MACHINE FILTER
Have you ever wondered where your spare change went? It's probably been sent to the debris filter of your washing machine, where it's then accumulating lint, forgotten tissues and gooey residue.
The filter is in your washing machine to protect the pump - a job it can only do efficiently if it is cleaned regularly. However, if neglected, it can also suffer from a build-up of germs, which of course results in unpleasant odors.
Consult the user manual to find out how to remove the filter and clean it - it would be disastrous to damage it. Have a shallow bowl and a towel ready on the floor under the filter door - there's likely to be a healthy trickle of water when you open it.
Again, while the filter is drying, clean the cavity to catch any debris inside.
